Blu-U (PDT) Acne Treatment

The Blu-U acne treatment delivers incoherent light at wavelengths of 400-450 nm. This light targets an organic compound generated by the p.acnes bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) called porphyrins. As a result, when this organic compound is stimulated by the Blu-U light, singlet oxygen is produced which kills the p.acnes bacteria which causes inflammation. Although the Blu-U acne treatment is used alone, for severe acne the Blu-U light is often combined with PDT for best results (ALA Photodynamic Therapy).

What Is Blu-U With PDT

PDT is a topical photosensitizing agent which is absorbed by abnormal cells, pores, and oil glands. PDT makes these areas more susceptible to the acne treatment. BLU-U and PDT is considered the most effective acne treatment that does not depend on oral medication to treat acne.

 

Overall, ALA Photodynamic therapy is an effective acne treatment because it is able to:


1. Partially destroying over active sebaceous glands.
2. Accelerate corneocyte shedding, inhibiting new comedone formation (exfoliation/light peeling).
3. Kill the p.acnes bacteria which causes the inflammation.

 

Normally 3-6 acne treatments are required for best results.

What Is The Spacing In Between Treatments?

Treatment intervals are usually every 8 to 10 weeks depending on patient recovery.

 

Do I need Time To Recover From PDT?

There is short down time with BLU-U??? Levulan??? acne treatments, but the results are worth it. You will need to remain indoors out of sunlight for 36 hours. You will be red and have some flaking. The majority will clear over one week. We offer a camouflage make-up that you can wear the 3rd day after the treatment.

 

Is There Anyone That Cannot Have Blu-U Levulan?

Patients taking Accutane. Patients who have Lupus or other light sensitive conditions; patients who are pregnant or breast feeding.

 

What Is The Blu-U Levulan Treatment Like?

Levulan is applied topically to the whole area to be treated and is left on for about 30 to 60 minutes. Then you're seated in front of a BLU-U light box for 8 to 12 minutes. BLU-U Levulan acne treatments also can be performed on chests, and backs.
