Hyperpigmentation is a common condition where the skin develops dark spots such as sun spots, age spots or dark patches in some areas in comparison to the surrounding skin. Skin discolouration may develop by trauma to the skin, while sun spots or age spots, and melasma are common reactions to sun exposure and aging.

Depending on your own body’s healing capabilities, many individuals develop hyperpigmentation after cuts or burns. Those who have had severe acne tend to develop hyperpigmentation and scarring once the acne has passed. Melasma, another form of hyperpigmentation, is a uniform brown color usually seen over the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. Unlike sun spots or age spots, pigmentation due to Melasma may appear through hormonal changes such as during pregnancy, puberty, and by taking oral contraceptives.
