Scar & Acne Scar Removal

Injury or trauma to the skin can cause the formation of scar tissue. A scar develops as your body’s natural response to healing after injury. The severity of this natural formation of scar tissue depends greatly on your age, ethnicity, depth of the injury and heredity. Common types of scars are stretch marks, surgical scars and acne scars.

Those who have had severe acne generally develop acne scars we well.  Scars and acne scars are fibrous tissues which are left behind or formed during wound healing.  Since everyone heals differently, everyone scars differently.  These scars can range from icepick scars, boxed scars, rolling scars and hypertrophic scars. Acne scars are often difficult to conceal and can greatly effect ones overall appearance and in turn self esteem.  Many people want to know how to get rid of acne scars.  At Bellair Laser Clinic we specialize in scar removal, acne scar removal or laser scar removal in Toronto.

At Bellair Laser Clinic we offer a number of procedures for scar removal and acne scar removal. These procedures include Laser Genesis, Microdermabrasion and Fraxel LASER Skin Resurfacing. Multiple sessions are usually required for best results. Fraxel is especially great for those who have combination hyperpigmented acne scars (redness within the scar) and pitted acne scars since this treatment improves skin texture while the laser also coagulates the skin. This treatment is the only laser available for treating all types of acne scars for all skin types.  See below for more information on our treatments for scar removal!

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SCARS

Icepick scars:  Ice pick scars are common amongst those who have had acne.  These scars lie deep in the dermis.  Due to the depth of these scars, laser scar removal with the Fraxel would be a better option verses microdermabrasion which regenerates only the superficial layers of the skin. The Fraxel laser is well known for treating ice pick scars since this laser penetrates very deep due to the fractional approach and laser intensity.

Boxed scars:  These scars usually are larger than ice pick scars, have a flat base and sharp edges.  As their name suggests, they look like a box in shape and form.  These scars could be formed by injury of any sort.

Rolling scars:  Rolling scars are usually associated with acne. These scars are often wide yet shallow in appearance.

Hypertrophic scars:  These scars usually form as a result of surgical procedures or severe injury.  These scars protrude the skin and are often red in appearance.  These scars respond extremely well to laser treatment for scar removal.  If you develop this type of scarring from simply acne or a break out, you may have keloid scars.

Keloid Scars:  These scars appear as a hard lump or growth in the skin.  These scars are more severe and sensitive than hypertrophic scars.  Keloid scars develop within scar tissue.  During wound healing, the skin overcompensates and forms excessive amounts of collagen in the area.  These types of scars are difficult to treat since most cosmetic procedures induce a small injury to the skin in order to force the body to repair itself and produce new tissue.  Stimulating this type of wound healing in the skin for those with keloid scars could make the scar appear worst than its original form due to the body’s need to “over heal” the area.  Those who have keloid scars should undergo a patch test before undergoing a series of scar removal treatments.

TREATMENTS FOR SCAR REMOVAL

FRAXEL® LASER TREATMENT SCAR REMOVAL

Whether your skin concern is superficial or deep acne scars, surgical scars on the face and body or stretch marks, finally exists a treatment which does it all and actually works.

At Bellair Laser Clinics in Toronto we call the Fraxel® Laser the magic eraser for scar removal since you will notice your skin transform. Fraxel® resurfaces the skin texture and complexion by producing thousands of tiny deep microscopic columns in the skin which are referred to as microscopic treatment zones (MTZ). These tiny treatment zones are surrounded by uninjured tissue. In other words, only a fraction of the skin is targeted, therefore, the skin is left intact which allows for quick wound healing. This treatment is ideal for those with moderate to deep surgical scars, stretch marks and acne scars.

MICRODERMABRASION/CHEMICAL PEELS FOR SCAR REMOVAL

Microdermabrasion and chemical peels are exfoliation treatments which gently resurface the skin.  This treatment is great for superficial scars. This exfoliation is performed with medical grade mineral crystals, diamond tip or with the use of different acids. This action removes dead and damaged cells at the skin's surface. By eliminating these surface cells, the skin is left soft and supple while forcing the regeneration of new skin cells. This treatment is ideal for mild scarring or uneven skin texture. Those that have combination acne and acne scars would benefit from this procedure.
