Sun spots, also known as age spots, liver spots, and lentigos are all pigmented lesions which are flat and brown in colour due to sun exposure. Common areas for sun spots include the face, chest, arms and hands. Pigmented lesions appear as the body’s natural defense against the sun. The melanocyte cells are responsible for producing these benign pigmented lesions. The melanocyte cells are stimulated to produce more pigment or melanin when exposed to ultraviolet rays.
Although the best treatment option is prevention, there are many treatments options available for sun spot removal. Sun spot removal is accomplished with the use of photorejuvenation or light therapy.
