HYPERPIGMENTATION TREATMENTS

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition where the skin develops dark spots or patches in some areas in comparison to the surrounding skin. Skin discolouration may develop by trauma to the skin, as sun spots or age spots, and melasma which are common reactions to sun exposure and aging.

Depending on your own body’s healing capabilities, many individuals develop hyperpigmentation after cuts or burns. Those who have had severe acne tend to develop hyperpigmentation and scarring once the acne as passed. Those who are prone to hyperpigmentation should avoid excessive picking or scratching of the skin as this may cause enough damage to signal your skin’s natural response which is to hyperpigment.

Sun spots or age spots are brown discolorations which are flush with the skin usually present on the face, neck, chest, and back of the hands otherwise known as liver spots. It is a common condition developed when there is an excess of melanin deposits in the skin.

Melasma, another form of hyperpigmentation, is a uniform brown color usually seen over the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. Hyperpigmentation due to Melasma may appear through sun exposure as well as hormonal changes such as during pregnancy, puberty, and by taking oral contraceptives.
