FAQ’s for ACNE TREATMENTS

Q: What are the possible treatment options for treating acne?
A:  At Bellair Laser Clinic, we offer the Blu-U, Blu-U/Levulan (Photodynamic Therapy), Salicylic Peels and Microdermabrasion for the treatment of acne.

Q: What is the Blu-U with Levulan Treatment?
A:  Blu-U with Levulan is a treatment also known as PDT or Photodynamic therapy. Levulan is a topical medication applied to the skin which makes the skin very photosensitive. A blue light is then applied to the skin which targets the acne bacteria beneath the surface of the skin. This treatment effectively treats severe acne by partially or completely destroying overactive sebaceous glands, promoting corneocyte shedding, and killing the acne bacteria in the skin.

Q: What will the skin look like immediately post a PHT treatment?
A:  Post treatment, the skin will be pink and slightly swollen. Some feel an intense heat for 24 to 48 hours post treatment. The skin will be photo-sensitive post treatment for 48 hours which is why sun exposure should be avoided during this time.

Q: How does microdermabrasion treat acne?
A:  Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment which remove the keratinized skin cells from the surface layers of the skin. It is great for those with blemishes by forcing skin regeneration. If the skin is able to shed or turnover as it should, break-outs may be avoided by preventing the build-up of bacteria underneath the skin.

Q: What can I expect post a microdermabrasion treatment?
A:  Post treatment you may notice slight pinkness and flaking in certain areas. There is no downtime with this treatment which is why it is often referred to as a lunch time procedure.

Q: What are chemical peels?
A: Chemical peels are exfoliation treatments which are also used to combat acne. We offer a wide range of peels. Glycolic and salicylic acid peels are most effective for those who experience blemishes. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid which means it has the ability to break apart oils which is beneficial for acne sufferers.

Q: What are the post care instructions?
A:  Post treatment, avoid the use of a hot tube or sauna and strenuous physical exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Do not expose the treatment area to the sun or tanning bed 2 weeks post treatment. Use sun block post treatment.

Q: What are the treatment intervals and how many treatments are required?
A:  Chemical peels or microdermabrasion may be anywhere from 10 days to 3 weeks apart. Photodynamic therapy is usually performed 3 to 4 weeks apart. When treating acne, multiple treatments are required for best results. The exact number of treatments will vary depending on your current skin condition, however, most clients undero a series of 6 sessions or greater.
