ACNE THERAPY: Blu-U/Levulan & Salicylic Peels

BLU-U/LEVULAN
The Blu-U is a device which delivers incoherent light at wavelengths of 400-450 nm. This light targets an organic compound generated by the p.acnes bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) called porphyrins. As a result, when this organic compound is stimulated by the Blu-U light, singlet oxygen is produced which kills the p.acnes bacteria which causes inflammation. Although Blu-U is used alone, for severe acne the Blu-U is often combined with Levulan for best results (ALA Photodynamic Therapy). Levulan is a topical photosensitizing agent which is absorbed by abnormal cells, pores, and oil glands. Levulan makes these areas more susceptible to the light treatment. BLU-U and Levulan is considered the most effective acne treatment that does not depend on oral medication to treat acne. Overall, ALA Photodynamic therapy treats acne by:

1. Partially destroying over active sebaceous glands
2. Accelerating corneocyte shedding, inhibiting new comedone formation (exfoliation/light peeling)
3. Kills the p.acnes bacteria which causes the inflammation.
Normally 3-6 treatments are required for best results which depends on your current skin condition.

BIOPHORA SALICYLIC ACID PEELS
Biophora Salicylic peels are also effective in controlling and overcoming breakout prone skin. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid which has the ability to break apart oils. Salicylic acid peels also promote cutaneous shedding while disolving black-heads and white-heads. Much like Blu-U/Levulan, multiple treatments are required for best results. Optimal results with fewest number of treatments are often accomplished with the use of Biophora home care products.

THE FORMATION OF ACNE
The skin is the largest organ of the body which contains several layers:  the subcutaneous layer, the dermis and epidermis. The outermost layer of the skin which seals the epidermis is the stratum corneum layer.  This layer actively sheds as the skin's cells naturally divide and multiple at the dermis-epidermis junction. The process of cell division and shedding is what we call skin regeneration.  When the skin does not shed properly or if skin cells are being produced at an abnormally quick rate (faster than normal), the end result is often what is known as acne

acne scar removal treatmentsAcne forms when sebum and bacteria become trapped in follicles in the skin.  The cycle begins when testosterone is converted by the skin which stimulates sebum production in the pores.  The oils cause dead cells to stick together while nurturing bacteria.  Blemishes appear when these oils prevent the skin from naturally shedding which may be in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples or cysts.  Severe cases of acne will often leave indentations or scars on the skin. Acne scars are best treated with the Fraxel Skin Resurfacing Treatment.

Before beginning any skin care regimen, we definitely recommend coming in for a complimentary consultation with one of our skin care specialists. Once we have seen your skin and discussed your skin goals, we will be better able to determine which treatment would be best for you.
